Brandon Collins Memorial Site

Master Deputy Brandon S. Collins
December 13, 1971 – September 11, 2016

Brandon Collins was born in Drumright, Oklahoma, and raised in Oilton, Oklahoma. He served two years with the Tulsa County, Oklahoma, Sheriff’s Office from 1993 to 1995.

On October 9, 1995, Brandon began his career with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and later was promoted to the rank of Master Deputy. In his 21 year career with the Sheriff’s Office, he worked in Detention, Narcotics, as a Task Force Officer with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Court Security and Patrol.

On September 11, 2016, at approximately 0130 hours, Master Deputy Brandon Collins was on routine patrol in Johnson County, Kansas, when he initiated a traffic stop in the 14300 block of northbound US 69 Highway, in Overland Park, Kansas.

After making initial contact with the driver, Master Deputy Collins returned to his patrol vehicle. While he sat in his vehicle, it was struck from behind by a Ford F250 Crew Cab pickup truck traveling at highway speed.

Master Deputy Collins died at the scene due to blunt force trauma from the impact.  Furthermore, the impact resulted in the patrol vehicle’s gas tank rupturing causing it to be consumed by fire. The driver of the truck was arrested and charged through Johnson County District Court with murder in the second degree/reckless; involuntary manslaughter – DUI; and failure to stop at an accident with a known death.

On September 15, 2016, services were held in Olathe, Kansas, and attended by law enforcement officers from many city, county, state, and federal agencies.

On September 17, 2016, Master Deputy Collins was laid to rest in Oilton, Oklahoma.

Brandon left behind his wife Traci, and his daughters Ashlee and Lily.

There are two memorials set up for Master Deputy Collins; one at the site of his accident on the 14300 block of 69 Highway, and one at the Sheriff’s Operations Building in New Century, KS.
